Idols, Martyrs, or Saints?
Casualties of the Golden Age of the Hollywood Star System
An exploration by Ann Hollingworth
A limited series on how Hollywood designed, patterned, and molded female actors to fit a need for a successful box office “type,” and the huge personal costs of fame.
Some sold their souls. Some lost their sanity. Some were sacrificial offerings. Some had to live a lie. Some were undervalued and continually demeaned. Some could never escape public scrutiny and criticism. Some ran out of time before getting their big break. Some became as ruthless as the studios that made them.
Each shadow box functions as a mini-theatre of a given actress’s experiences in chasing her career. These pieces use mixed media — gaudy carnival colors, old sewing patterns and materials, antique and vintage objects — to represent their surprising, cluttered, complex lives. Each woman’s story, of course, is a cautionary tale.
